Dimmer was awarded the VC for his actions on Thursday 12 November 1914, close to Klein Zillebeke in Belgium. Dimmer was at the controls of a machine gun, and despite being shot twice and hit by shrapnel, he continued firing at the advancing enemy before they retreated. His actions are credited as having saved many British lives.
